Stan and Janet Broome and their children, Daniel, Erica and Alex, are an integral part of our community. Stan was born into a respected family with roots in the Ger line of Hasidim. He grew up on the Lower East Side and attended RJJ and the Bialystoker Synagogue, where he, like his two brothers Alvin and Bernard, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah as well as his aufruf. After graduate school, Stan moved to the Upper West Side. Janet, hailing from a prominent Orthodox family, grew up in Long Beach. She attended the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach and HILI High School before heading off to college and a year at Bar Ilan University. Stan and Janet met on Shavuot at Grossinger’s when Janet, working on her tan, said to Stan, “Excuse me, you’re blocking my sun.” Always up for a challenge, Stan was hooked and soon became Janet’s 24/7 sunshine.

About ten years ago, after Janet underwent foot surgery, she was scootering around the neighborhood on her “knee-walker” looking for a shul close to home. She and Stan scootered into The Carlebach Shul and have been part of our family ever since.

Janet, a commercial real estate broker, was involved in hotel sales and land development until she started a family. In order to be more available for her children, she changed her focus to residential sales with more manageable hours. Stan was the CEO of CBB Medical, an Independent Practice Association of 750 physicians. Today he remains active in the healthcare space as well as in real estate.

Janet and Stan have long been involved in chesed and hospitality in their modest way, and the family’s tradition of committed involvement in Jewish causes continues with their three wonderful children. Daniel, the oldest, is an active participant in Shul activities and events. He was also a volunteer at Yachad, where he made a difference in the lives of many children. Erica, who recently became engaged to Matthew Alter, brightens every Shul function, just like her mother. She is also an active Cycle for Survival member, raising money for Memorial Sloan Kettering to battle cancer. Alex is a regular at the Shul’s Friday night minyan and has organized multiple young professional Friday night dinners, which have attracted capacity crowds of 150 attendees.

The Broomes are part of what makes The Carlebach Shul so special, and we are fortunate to count them as our very own.
